Designing a Scalable Store-Within-a-Store for Connected Home Tech

Designing a Scalable Store-Within-a-Store for Connected Home Tech

When a trusted supplier of custom retail displays asked us to help design a store-within-a-store concept for a major big box hardware retailer, we knew flexibility would be key. The goal? Create a modular merchandising system that could showcase connected devices—like smart thermostats, lighting, and outlets—within a wide range of store footprints, from a simple endcap to a space as large as a full paint center.

Our solution was a series of sleek 48-inch modular units, each featuring illuminated product demo zones to highlight the tech in action, along with ample space for merchandise below. Interchangeable graphic panels made it easy to update branding and promotions, while the units could be arranged inline, side-by-side, or back-to-back to fit any store layout.

We explored three creative directions, each offering a distinct visual and functional approach. The final concept combined a clean, modern aesthetic with intuitive product navigation—and it won the client’s approval. A test rollout in select markets received positive feedback and a green light for expansion.

At Coyote Concepts, Inc., we design environments that not only sell products—but also tell stories, adapt to space, and enhance the customer experience. Whether you’re lighting up the smart home aisle or launching your next in-store concept, we’re ready to help you make a smart move.
